clinical diagnosis of definite angina. The women with angina in our study were, on average, 64 years old; they had definite angina determined by two independent, standardized, physician-administered medical histories, which were subsequently reviewed and adjudicated by a panel of three physicians. Although the number of women with angina in our study who actually had coronary disease cannot be determined with certainty, estimation of prevalence and event rates by removal of half the women with angina would be inaccurate. We wholeheartedly agree with Dr Horton that the prognosis in women with angina is not benign. We stated in our article that "women with angina have five times the risk for a subsequent coronary event (coronary insufficiency, myocardial infarction, or coronary death) when compared with women free of chest discomfort symptoms, a risk gradient just as high as that observed for men with angina."3 The need is clear for further data on cardiovascular disease in women that is derived from a database that can confirm clinically suspect cases of coronary disease.

Because we consider the last paragraph of our editorial4 ger-mane to our concern, reiteration will serve to emphasize its vital importance: "In the absence of such a reporting system and lacking new scientifically based data to supersede the old, we strongly urge manufacturers of electromedical equipment to continue to design their systems so as to meet the 1975 AHA committee recommendations an...

This editorial is a follow-up to a 1994 editorial 1 by the same authors with the same title. The 1994 editorial emphasized that revised national standards, which relaxed the maximum allowable current that may be delivered to patients by electromedical equipment, presented unnecessary hazards to patients with indwelling catheters, and it described the need to obtain more scientifically based dat...

متن کاملSafe Use of Flammable Endotracheal Tubes During Anesthesia for Laryngeal Laser Surgery-Report of 1024 Cases and a Brief Literature Review
Introduction: One of the major concerns in laryngeal laser surgery is the risk of airway fire. The introduction ofwrapped tubes and metal tubes has reduced the fire hazards. However, these tubes are expensive and do not provide convenient access to the surgical field. There are few laboratory studies addressing the resistance of polyvinylchloride tubes against ignition in the given circum...
